Manchester United has officially announced the departure of striker Joe Hugill, who is set to join Kilmarnock, but coach Michael Carrick has made it clear that Joshua Zirkzee will not be leaving the club this January.
The 22-year-old Hugill has been part of Manchester United since he was a teenager, having come from Sunderland. Despite his long tenure, he has not managed to secure a place in the first team and has spent time on loan at various clubs, including Altrincham, Burton Albion, Wigan, and Carlisle. Now, he is ready for a permanent transfer to Kilmarnock, marking a new chapter in his career.
Conversely, there have been rumors regarding Zirkzee's potential return to Italy, where he initially rose to prominence before joining the Premier League side in 2024. However, United has no intention of allowing him to leave, despite his challenges in finding the back of the net this season, which has prompted the club to bolster its attacking options. Notably, Italian giants Juventus have shown interest in him, further complicating the situation.
Carrick is optimistic about Zirkzee's future with the team, stating, "Josh is just trying to work to get fit and integrate with the group. It has been fantastic to have him back in training with everyone for the first time. That’s where we stand right now, and I’m eager to work with him moving forward. There’s nothing more to discuss at this point."
Zirkzee has had limited playtime this season, making only four starts in the Premier League and managing to score just twice. After seeing Rasmus Hojlund depart for Italy over the summer, where he has since thrived at Napoli, it seems unlikely that Zirkzee will follow in his footsteps.
As Carrick continues his role as head coach until the end of the season, he has been informed that he will need to work with the current squad, as Manchester United's recruitment plans are currently on hold until the summer. Nonetheless, he remains open to possibilities ahead of the transfer window's closure on Monday night.
He expressed his perspective on the matter: "We’re navigating through the situation, and I believe that anything is possible. A lot can happen, and while some circumstances are within our control, others are not. We maintain a calm demeanor and have demonstrated our capabilities as a team. We’ll see what unfolds in the coming days. But for now, we remain collected."
The club's primary focus is on acquiring a midfielder, but their targets are not expected to be available until summer, and they won't come cheap. Players like Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, and Carlos Baleba are on their radar.
