In a move that has baseball fans buzzing, MJ Melendez has officially signed a free-agent deal with the New York Mets, marking the end of his four-season stint with the Kansas City Royals. But here’s where it gets intriguing: Melendez, once a top prospect for the Royals, is now stepping into an outfield lineup that already includes heavy hitters like Juan Soto and Luis Robert Jr. Can he carve out a spot for himself? This offensive firepower earned him a spot in the majors the following year. Yet, this is the part most people miss: despite his power, Melendez struggled to find consistency at the big-league level, batting just .083 in 60 at-bats during the 2025 season. The Royals ultimately demoted him to Triple-A Omaha, where he rediscovered his form, finishing with an .813 OPS, 20 homers, 64 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases.
Despite his minor-league success, the Royals chose not to renew his contract for 2026, leaving Melendez to test free agency. Enter the Mets, who offered him a one-year, $1.5 million deal—a fresh start for the 26-year-old. Meanwhile, the Royals are moving forward with Isaac Collins and Lane Thomas in their outfield.
