Opera singer Janine Roebuck, who spent 30 years hiding her deafness, has hailed a groundbreaking surgery as a life-changing experience. This procedure, a double cochlear implant, is now being trialed nationwide by the NHS to potentially transform the lives of countless patients. The current guidelines restrict most deaf adults to a single implant, citing cost-effectiveness and a lack of evidence for two implants. However, the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is funding a study led by Addenbrooke’s hospital and the University of Cambridge to explore the benefits of bilateral implants for adults. Roebuck, a mezzo-soprano who performed at the Royal Opera House, suffered from sensorineural hearing loss, an inherited condition. She underwent a single cochlear implant in 2019 but opted to pay for a second implant simultaneously. The results were remarkable, with improved sound quality, clarity, and naturalness, as well as enhanced spatial awareness and easier navigation in busy environments. Roebuck, who had hidden her deteriorating hearing for decades, described the surgery as a liberating experience, reconnecting her to the world and people. She highlighted the social isolation and mental health challenges that can arise from hearing loss, emphasizing the transformative impact of bilateral implants. The trial, involving 14 hospitals and 250 adults, aims to compare the outcomes of unilateral and bilateral implants. Ear, nose, and throat surgeon Matthew Smith and speech and hearing scientist Prof Debi Vickers lead the study, emphasizing the potential for improved quality of life and social interactions. The results will be submitted to Nice for review, with the hope of expanding the eligibility for bilateral implants.
